How far do you travel?

The photographer will travel to/from your barn or designated location, not to exceed 35 miles in one direction from the zip code 16365. For locations beyond this initial distance, an average travel fee of $50 will be applied for every 35 miles beyond that travel radius at the Photographer's discretion.

What to wear for horse portraits?

Choosing what to wear for your horse photo session doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. The goal is simple: wear something that feels comfortable, flattering, and true to you while complementing your horse’s coloring and personality.

Soft, timeless colors like cream, navy, olive, burgundy, and earth tones photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on the connection between you and your horse. I recommend avoiding bright neon colors, large logos, or busy patterns, as they can distract from the emotional feel of your portraits.

Most importantly, choose clothing you feel confident in. Long flowing dresses can create an elegant, dramatic look, while jeans, boots, and a classic blouse can feel natural and authentic to your everyday life with your horse.

To help make the process easy, every client receives a complimentary phone consultation and a digital Color Guide. This guide helps you choose colors that coordinate beautifully with your horse, flatter you, and feel cohesive with your home decor so your final artwork looks beautiful on your walls.

Many clients bring multiple outfit options to create variety in their gallery. During your planning consultation, I’m happy to help you choose outfits that coordinate beautifully with your horse, your location, and the artwork style you envision for your home.

What's the best pose with your horse?

The best poses with your horse are rarely stiff or overly posed. Some of the most meaningful images come from genuine moments of connection between you and your horse.

Simple poses often create the most powerful portraits. Standing beside your horse with gentle contact, resting your forehead against theirs, softly holding the lead, or walking together can all create timeless imagery filled with emotion.

You don’t need modeling experience to create beautiful photographs. I guide every session with easy, natural direction so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to look.

It’s also helpful to bring another person who knows both you and your horse well. They can help hold or adjust items on you or your horse, and they can stand near me or your horse—depending on the pose—to help encourage your horse to look in the right direction. Treats are never a bad idea, unless you have a true mooch, in which case we can save them for the end.

I also watch for candid moments—the quiet glance, the nuzzle, the playful expression, or the gentle touch that reveals your unique bond. Those unscripted moments often become the most treasured images because they reflect the real relationship you share with your horse.

How to Prepare Your Horse for Photos?

Preparing your horse for a photo session doesn’t require perfection—just thoughtful preparation. The goal is to help your horse feel comfortable, relaxed, and ready to enjoy the experience.

Before your session, give your horse a thorough grooming, paying special attention to the coat, mane, tail, and face. Clean tack, polished halters, and neatly braided or brushed manes can elevate the final images beautifully, though natural looks are equally welcome depending on your style.

If possible, allow time before the session for your horse to settle in. A relaxed horse often leads to softer expressions and calmer moments that photograph beautifully.

Most importantly, remember that horses do not know that they're at a photo session, so we give them space. My horse-first approach allows plenty of patience and flexibility, creating space for authentic moments to unfold naturally without stress or pressure.

To help you feel fully prepared, I also send follow-up emails with support, helpful tips, simple checklists, and gentle reminders leading up to your session. These emails are designed to make the process easier, reduce stress, and help you feel confident every step of the way.

You will want another person who is familiar with both you and your horse who can help to hold or adjust items on both you or your horse. They can then stand beside me or the horse (depending on the pose) to encourage the horse to look in their direction. Treats are never a bad idea, unless you have a mooch. Then we would just save them for the end.

What if it RAINS or I feel SICK the day of my photo session?

Life happens, and I completely understand! If you’re feeling under the weather or if the forecast the night before your photo session isn’t looking great, don’t worry—your session can absolutely be rescheduled. I typically save Sundays as my “Rain Date” for any makeup days the week before.

If I need to reschedule due to illness, weather, equipment malfunction, or other factors beyond my control, your session fee will be applied to a new session date. You will be notified as early as possible about any changes.

What if I'm running late the day of the session?

The client's session time begins when the Photographer arrives at the scheduled time. Failure of the Client to be on time may result in fewer final images, poses, or outfits, and lost time will not be refunded or rescheduled. Photographer will determine if the session must be rescheduled due to poor weather conditions. Clients must notify Carrie Duckett Photography, LLC by phone at 814-779-2383 to cancel their session no later than 24 hours before the original scheduled date and time to qualify for a one-time rescheduled session date. The sitting fee will be applied to the new date. All other circumstances will result in the forfeiture of their session fee and the ability to reschedule.

What Size Artwork Do I Need for above my couch?

In general, you take the art's width, including its frame, to measure about two-thirds of the couch length. Then hang it 8 to 10 inches above the couch so that they appear visually connected. Typically, you should center pictures at eye level, but in a sitting area, hang them a few inches lower, if possible. You can use multiple smaller pieces together in a series or collection to achieve the same look instead of one large piece if desired.
